Girls Just Wanna Mash-up

I first heard Girl Talk on, of all places, NPR's On Point. The shows guests discussed the legitimacy of mixing musical genres into a cohesive genre in and of itself: the mash-up. To label Girl Talk, a.k.a Gregg Gillis, a simple mash-up DJ is to call Raging Bull a simple boxing movie. Gillis composes a symphony of unearthed complexities impossible to get on first listen. He favors modern day hip-hop with 80s pop radio. Half the fun is recognizing what he samples. The other half is wondering how he did of it.
