Never Mind
Pharrell Williams' In My Mind has somehow aged into an often times highly listenable, though still wildly disappointing, solo effort. On the heels of Neptunes dormancy (or maybe this collection of half Rap/half RnB songs beckoned the super group's slide into second tier production?), the album really never had a chance to live up to pre-fanfare. Though hearing it today is interesting for a number of reasons, most of which is because Pharrell's songwriting serves as a precursor to his current exploits into the worlds of fashion and art toys. The track that stands out most, besides its largely under appreciated lead single, Can I Have It Like That, is the Jay-Z duet, Young Girl. It is at the same time an homage and emulation of Michael Jackson circa PYT and is leaps better than the duo's previous collaboration on the Neptunes' Clones album.
