Riggins

Looking for a comedy of cultures? Presidents Obama and Sarkozy are a good start. Watching these two pal around on the international scene is kind of like watching the rebirth of Detectives Roger Murtaugh and Martin Riggs. By the end of Obama's first term, I'm sure the two will have partnered on any number of global issues that involve climate change, the world economy, and Gary Busey. But for sociologists interested more in domestic urbanity than action comedy, go no further than Madison, Wisconsin. Long a city known for its small town values and liberal leaning pomp and circumstance, the state capitol has recently seen a significant influx of minorities in and around its city limits that is leaving area Caucasians baffled and uncomfortable by strange, new behaviors. Stuff like sitting on porches, or walking on the sidewalk in groups, especially if you're a young person, is, like, totally creepy. It's reason enough to call the cops. Especially in those neighborhoods where outside contact is limited to yard work and garage sales.

Throw Bucky from the Train

Wisconsin is set to buy two high speed passenger trains for use along the Milwaukee - Chicago corridor. Any resident can ride the trains so long as they are not a clown, bearded lady or other circus attraction.

Bacta Tank

Wisconsin is on the verge of passing a state-wide smoking ban in most public places. Opponents argue the proposed law is an affront to civil liberties and will bring a string business closures. Supporters say the move would save lives and reduce taxes needed for health care costs. Me? After a night out, I'll be happy not having to douse myself in Febreze like Luke suspended in that life revitalization hot tub in Empire after Han rescues him from sub zero temperatures and a rabid wampa. That scene is a good idea what it's like to barhop in Wisconsin during the dead of winter.

Coyote Ugly

From yesterday's Wisconsin State Journal: "Madison residents consider hiring sharpshooter to kill coyotes".
This of course is happening on the west side of town where it is legal for residents to hire skilled assassins to get rid of wild varmint. For reference: City of Madison Ordinances, Chapter 5, Animals and Fowl, Art. VI. Not In My Backyard, 5-63-5-78.

Cartwheel Blanche

The new state logo for Wisconsin is meant to stimulate commerce and agriculture, but instead will inspire the 2 a.m. bar scene on State Street.

Cheech and Cieslewicz

The mayor of Madison, Wisconsin, Dave Cieslewicz, said during a local radio show that he has no problem with legalizing marijuana. To some, this will explain his failed trolley car plan.

LEEDhead

A Madison, Wisconsin couple is hoping to achieve the state's highest LEED rating for a home. All the features you've come to expect in green design are here. Among them: solar panels, a tankless water heater, efficient lighting and dual-flush toilets. Though I'm not aware of other homes featuring kitchens capable of brewing beer and making cheese. As is the case here.
